EPHESIANS
Commentator Markus Barth called the book of Ephesians 'Paul's Puzzling Epistle' ("The Broken Wall: A Study of the Epistle to the Ephesians", Judson Press, 1959; p. 13). Like a letter from a stranger, it lacks the expected personal flavor that we see in some of his other letters, and is filled instead with unusually complex language. His use of words reflects someone who is full to overflowing with Good News and is seeking to express the wonders of the mystery of what God has done by using words in non-conventional patterns such as excessively long sentences, multiple relative clauses and an abundance of prepositional phrases. It is our privilege to simply observe this beautiful, if sometimes awkward language as Paul overflows with enthusiasm about what God has done through Jesus, bringing salvation for all nations and establishing the Church as the dwelling place of God on earth. May we catch his excitement and may we respond with humble thanks and implicit obedience!
